MOVEMENT / FITNESS / YOGA

Regular movement sessions can be an important part of a person’s health care program to improve daily functioning. A wide range of techniques are used in movement therapy ranging from fitness, yoga, exercise, as well as free natural movement incorporated with play, sound, fun, and improvisation. The tailored program is designed to ensure that the body is regularly moved and exercised in an accessible and therapeutic capacity by a professional practitioner. Sessions are tailored in a way that supports the complex needs of the body to target any associated impairments in relation to physical disability, and/or psychosocial disability or mental health issues.

Through a series of lead movement sequences ranging from simple to complex, all major muscle groups and joint complexes are used with a focus on: strength; stretching; flexibility; mobilisation; balance; coordination; focus; relaxation and breathing techniques. The therapy also has a refined focus on improving posture, and mobilising and releasing any tension in joints, back, legs, arms, and neck. This combination of targeted therapeutic care can enable the mobility and strength to be more confident and free in the body, and able to do more in everyday life.

Some of the specific improvements for participants include:

  • Experience relief from anxiety and stress that can accompany people’s condition.

  • Improve everyday function and overall health and wellbeing.

  • Listen to and follow exercise-based instructions.

  • Follow and remember simple to complex series of exercise sequences.

  • Better control feelings of being overwhelmed or sensory overload.

  • Build trust, self-confidence, comfort, safety in their body and improve posture.

  • Transition more easily between routine and breaking out of routine.

  • Taking initiatives for practicing favourite exercises and expressing enjoyment doing them.

  • Share increased verbal and non-verbal communication throughout the sessions.

  •  Improvement when facing challenges.

  •  Build knowledge, awareness trust, comfort and confidence of own body and self.

  •  Improve and reinforce social and communication skills.

Optionally, participants can choose to learn self-massage skills, and/or receive a short massage, which can be added at the end of each session. Clinic appointments or home visits are available within reasonable distance.

CARER SUPPORT

At Full Circle we know that carers often need as much support as the person they take care of, due to the persistent physical, emotional and mental demands required of them in their role. Carers often compromise their health over time, whilst attending to the person they care for. Receiving support in the form of regular movement or massage sessions ensures that you can take care of yourself, so you are more available to your role as carer, whilst enjoying improved wellbeing in your daily life.

Options and benefits for carer support include:

  • Being part of the movement/fitness/yoga class for the cared person

  • Often a one-on-one session such as massage or movement therapy for the carer can be accessed through the funding of the cared person

  • Invest in some regular sessions for your wellbeing with support that is tailored for your needs.

  • Learn tools to care for mental and physical fitness for carers/parent.

  • Learn skills to prevent burnout and injury.

  • Learn techniques for self-care, relaxation and mindfulness

Clinic appointments or home visits available within reasonable distance.

MASSAGE FOR A GROUP

This is a suitable option when more than one person would like to receive a massage in a household, but may not have the capacity or desire to have a full session. In this case, a minimum of 60-minutes or more can be divided between the recipients. Some of the time variations can include: 2x30min, 3x20 min, 4x15min, 2x45min, or 6x15min.

The shorter sessions (15-30min) can have a focus on a particular issue or body region such as:

  •     Upper or lower body

  •     Back and shoulder

  •     Head, neck and shoulder

  •     Feet and legs

  •     Hands and arms

The massage can be adapted fully to the person's need and capacity to receive the therapy. The massage can be done on the massage mat on the floor, massage table, in a chair/ wheelchair or the person's own bed. The session can be received fully clothed or partial (please note that when oil or cream is used, modest and appropriate draping is practiced).

WHAT PEOPLE SAY

As a person with spinal injury I used to get severe muscle tightness and pain from my lack of movement. Since I have been seeing Nandi my body and muscles are relaxed and I have no joint pain at all.

It is amazing that Nandi comes to my house so I can receive this service in an environment I’m comfortable with, and I can actually get on the bed, as I can’t stand or transfer at every other regular massage centre.

Nandi is an amazing therapist and really cares for my whole wellbeing and provides a holistic service. It’s great how Nandi can tailor my session to how my body is reacting during each session. I have never used a massage therapy service who understood disability so much and actually cared too.
